We held our 4th Annual Fine Arts Fair on Thursday, April 12th. This year we worked with a company called Artome, which allowed for every student to have a piece of art framed and matted. The artwork was then for sale with a portion of the proceeds going to the SMOW Fine Arts Department. Along with the art work kindergarten through 3rd grade students performed songs. The students danced and played a variety of instruments. Miss. Stopczynski's piano students also performed.

The 8th grade students looked at different examples of art that focused on a certain state. We talked about how advertising is used to attract tourists to visit certain places. The 8th grade students each picked a state in which they had to create an illustration that would best represent it. The 6th grade students learned about Claes Oldenburg and his giant sculptures. We focused on his food sculptures. The 6th graders were than challenged to create their own food sculpture completely out of paper.
The 3rd grade students learned about Piet Mondrian and his use of primary colors set amongst black lines. They created a frame using black strips of paper that they then filled with primary colors to create a mobile.
The 8th grade students used plastic mask molds and paper mache to create a mask. They then designed and painted the mask. They looked great when they were completed!
The kindergarten students had done a project based on lines last week, so this week we followed up with a project about shapes. They used different shapes to create a shape train!
The 7th grade students learned about the art movement Futurism. The students reproduced the movement of a figure using the method of overlapping and force lines used by the Futurists in their works. Using a figure made of card stock that the students cut out and put together they traced the figure on a white sheet moving the figures slightly. Then they added the force lines around the figure to emphasize movement, and with a brush and water they diluted the color of the markers. The watercolor effect of the colors gave further movement to the drawing.
The 3rd grade students discussed Cinco de Mayo. They then looked at images of maracas. They then drew a design or their own maraca that had a Cinco de Mayo theme. Each student then drew their design on a wooden mini maraca with sharpies.
The 5th grade students used a template and chalk to create the Northern Lights. They chose what colors they would like and if the lights were horizontal or vertical.
The kindergarten students talked about Self-Portraits. We also discussed collage. Each student glued squares of tissue paper to a sheet of paper to create a background. They then drew a Self-Portrait. They colored it with crayons and outlined with black marker. The cut their self-portrait out and glued it to their colorful tissue paper collage background. I then used mod podge to create a shiny surface on the finished pieces.
