The 5th grade students sketched a letter keeping in mind a flat base for the letter to stand. They drew the letter on a piece of cardboard and cut it out. They then traced that same letter onto another piece of cardboard. Using paper towel and toilet paper rolls cut into smaller pieces the students glued the two cardboard letters together to create a 3-D letter. Using paper mache they covered the letters. Once this was dry the letters were painted with acrylic paint.
The 5th grade students reviewed horizon lines and value. They then use a watercolor wash to create a winter sky above their horizon line. Next, they added a fence using washable marker. They later went over the fence with a wet paintbrush for a watercolor effect. They used white strips of paper and extra fine point sharpies for their birch trees. The finishing touch was adding a shadow to their fence and trees using watered down purple watercolor.
The 5th grade students learned about radial design. They then had to create a stitched dot either from a pattern or created their own.
The 5th grade students received packets with animals who are native to Africa. They chose which animals they wanted to draw and only did the animals silhouettes. We then talked about creating a sunset using warm colors and watercolors. The students drew their animals standing on the ground along with a tree and cut them out as one continuous piece. They then glued this to their backgrounds.
The 5th grade students visit a neighboring parish every April to plant pinwheels in their Healing Garden. The pinwheels represent a commitment to a happy, healthy and safe environment for all children. The students each designed and colored a square piece of paper. They used this piece of paper, a new pencil and a push pin to make their pinwheel.

The 5th grade students learned about the Day of the Dead in Spanish class with Senorita Hunn. The students created a Day of the Dead altar for a relative. The altars were made in Spanish and Art class. The altars included candles (battery operated), tissue paper flowers the students made, sugar skulls, and items that they brought from home that represented their relatives. The students also created sugar skulls out of clay and decorated them with sharpie.
The 5th grade students learned about Op Art. They drew their hand in a way that it appears to be popping off the paper. They used straight lines and curved lines to achieve the illusion.
The 5th grade students learned about low relief (bas relief) sculpture. They then created a line design on a piece of card board. Using glue to trace their drawing they then laid yarn on top of the glue. After the glue and yarn dried the cardboard was covered with foil. Sharpie was used to color in the negative space between the lines that the yarn created.
