The 1st grade students made Koinobori (carp streamers) in honor of Children's Day. Children's Day is celebrated on May 5th in Japan. Children's Day is a day set aside to respect children's personalities and to celebrate their happiness.
The 7th grade students created totem poles out of clay. The totem poles had three sections, so the students had to create 3 different mini sculptures and attach them together. Each part of the totem pole had to represent something important to the student. The students had to keep in mind when creating their sculpture that it had to be able to stand up. The following week after the totem poles dried the students painted them.
The 1st grade students learned about Henri Rousseau. We looked at his painting of jungles. They then drew tigers and painted them. They cut leaves from tissue paper and glued them around the tiger.
The 3rd grade students learned about the principle of art, unity. Each table of students connected their papers to create a square. They traced multiple sized circles onto their paper making sure to overlap their neighbor's paper. Using oil pastels the students added white reflections into all of the bubbles. A variety of colors were added to all of the bubbles also.
Kindergarten students looked at a variety of paintings and described the feelings in the paintings. We also talked about how different colors and lines are associated with certain feelings. They then chose an emotion to represent in their own artwork. The students created abstract paintings of emotions using the colors and lines they felt represented that emotion.
The 5th grade students visit a neighboring parish every April to plant pinwheels in their Healing Garden. The pinwheels represent a commitment to a happy, healthy and safe environment for all children. The students each designed and colored a square piece of paper. They used this piece of paper, a new pencil and a push pin to make their pinwheel.
We held the 2nd annual St. Mary of the Woods School Fine Arts Fair! Each student had a piece of art in the show. The artwork included sculpture, weaving, drawings, oil pastels and paintings. The kindergarten through 3rd grade performed animal themed songs with Miss. Stopczynski our music teacher. We also had art that was created in Spanish class with Senorita Hunn on display. Kindergarten through 3rd grade each had QR codes with short videos explaining their art attached to their piece.
Mrs. Cruz our technology teacher made all of the QR codes with the students. |
