The first grade students looked at the work of Piet Mondrian. The students made observations such as Mondrian used primary colors and white. He also used black lines to separate these colors. The students then traced a heart template on a sheet of paper that had lines drawn on it already. They used primary colors to color in the squares and rectangles in their hearts. They then cut the hearts out and using pre-cut strips of black construction paper and glue covered their lines.

The 4th grade students had learned about onomatopoeias with their classroom teacher. We revisited them in the art room incorporating Pop Art into the mix. Each student made a collage of newspapers on a large sheet of paper. They then cut a border with either jagged or curvy edges that was glued to the newspaper collage. They then had to choose which onomatopoeia they wanted to use. Using a primary color paper they cut their word out and glued it on adding stars or other shapes to the background. They outlined everything with a sharpie to complete the project.
The first grade students looked at the work of Monet and learned about Impressionism. They then used oil pastels to draw a bridge and waterlilies onto their paper. After they dabbed cool color watercolors onto the rest of their paper to create an Impressionist painting!
The 5th grade students reviewed horizon lines and value. They then use a watercolor wash to create a winter sky above their horizon line. Next, they added a fence using washable marker. They later went over the fence with a wet paintbrush for a watercolor effect. They used white strips of paper and extra fine point sharpies for their birch trees. The finishing touch was adding a shadow to their fence and trees using watered down purple watercolor.
