The 3rd grade students learned about Piet Mondrian and his use of primary colors set amongst black lines. They created a frame using black strips of paper that they then filled with primary colors to create a mobile.

The 3rd grade students discussed Cinco de Mayo. They then looked at images of maracas. They then drew a design or their own maraca that had a Cinco de Mayo theme. Each student then drew their design on a wooden mini maraca with sharpies.
The 3rd grade students discussed line and all of the different types of line. Next, we talked about movement in art and how you can create it. Each student created a line design and colored a sheet of paper with markers. They then measured half inches across the back of their paper creating strips that they numbered 1-24. They then glued the strips down in order fanning them out. To create a moving line.
The 3rd grade students sculpted fish using model magic. They then painted the fish and picked a shell to use as a base for their fish.
The 3rd grade students created suns in celebration for Cinco de Mayo. We talked about using concentric circles when creating the suns. We also discussed what role suns play in Mexican culture. The students added a face to their sun and colored them with bright colors.
The 3rd grade students learned about the principle of art, unity. Each table of students connected their papers to create a square. They traced multiple sized circles onto their paper making sure to overlap their neighbor's paper. Using oil pastels the students added white reflections into all of the bubbles. A variety of colors were added to all of the bubbles also.
3rd grade students covered a white piece of paper with different colored scraps of tissue paper. They set this aside to dry. They then used oil pastels to draw fireworks on a black piece of paper. The tissue paper colors bled onto the white leaving beautiful multicolored sheets of paper. The students then drew the Statue of Liberty onto the colorful paper. They cut their drawing out and pasted it onto the black background with the fireworks. The end result appeared that the fireworks were reflected on the Statue of Liberty.
