5th Grade Day of the Dead Altars, Sugar Skulls, Tissue Paper Flowers and Papel Picado Flags10/28/2016 Last year each student made an individual altar for the Day of the Dead. This year the students in Mrs. Cheevers class made one large altar. In art class they made sugar skulls out of clay and decorated them with marker. They also made tissue paper flowers and papel picado flags to decorate the altar with. The 8th grade students created a night sky by mixing paint to create different tints. They then used black paint to add branch silhouettes onto their night sky.
The 8th grade Artist Research Project was inspired by Chicago's Cows on Parade. Cows on Parade was when local artists painted, decorated, and dressed up fiberglass cow statues, and then exhibited them around the city for several months. The 8th graders were assigned a famous artist and were each given a plastic dinosaur instead of a rubber duck like last year. They had to paint the dinosaur in a way that represented the artist. Some students painted their dinosaur in the style of the artist, while others painted their dinosaur to look like the artist. I spray painted each dinosaur white, so the students would have a blank canvas to work with.
