The 4th grade students learned about Picasso and his blue period. They looked at his painting The Old Guitarist. We then discussed how to make something look abstract. They practiced drawing a cubist, distorted and elongated guitar. They then created their final guitar on a large piece of paper. They used different shades of blue to paint their guitars. The students came up with really interesting shaped guitars!
The 4th grade students had learned about onomatopoeias with their classroom teacher. We revisited them in the art room incorporating Pop Art into the mix. Each student made a collage of newspapers on a large sheet of paper. They then cut a border with either jagged or curvy edges that was glued to the newspaper collage. They then had to choose which onomatopoeia they wanted to use. Using a primary color paper they cut their word out and glued it on adding stars or other shapes to the background. They outlined everything with a sharpie to complete the project.
The 4th grade students created their own sketchbooks. They designed their cover using colored pencil and accordion folded white paper. They then glued the front and back cover to their accordion folded paper. Their first sketchbook assignment was to draw a self-portrait in the style of Roy Lichtenstein with Ben-Day Dots and a word bubble.
4th grade students learned about the Day of the Dead in Spanish class with Senorita Hunn_. Students wrote their name in cursive on the seam of a folded piece of paper. They then cut their name out being careful not to cut the seam of the paper. When they opened the paper up they had what resembled a rib cage made out of their name. They added a skull and arm and hand bones. They then decorated their skeletons giving them hats, jewelry, and flowers.
The 4th grade students learned about artist Keith Haring and gesture drawing. Students acted out gestures in front of the class. The other students did quick sketches of these gestures. They then chose their favorite gesture and drew it in the style of Keith Haring.
The 4th grade students learned about silhouettes. They drew a banyan tree and colored it in with black sharpie. Using oil pastels they thought about what colors would mix well together (primary colors, analogous colors, cool/warm colors). They then blended the oil pastels in each section .
